Domaine François Bertheau – Chambolle-Musigny, Burgundy, France

Introduction

Domaine François Bertheau sits at the quiet heart of Chambolle-Musigny, crafting perfumed, ethereal Pinot Noir with finesse and silk. The 6.9 ha estate includes Bonnes-Mares, Les Amoureuses, and several premier cru parcels, with vines averaging ~50 years. Recognition dates back to 1989, and since taking full charge in 2004, François has pursued a purist style where terroir speaks clearly.

In the Vineyard

Farming follows lutte raisonnée, guided by observation and a light touch with inputs to preserve soil life and biodiversity. Harvest timing remains traditional—around 100 days after flowering—seeking poise and layered ripeness. François is a constant presence in the vines, convinced the real work begins there.

In the Cellar

Grapes are fully destemmed. Fermentations proceed with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel, with very gentle extraction and minimal pigeage or remontage. Élevage runs ~18 months with low new oak (<10%); the Chambolle-Musigny Village matures in large old foudres to protect lift. Racking is minimal; fining/filtration only if necessary.

Style

Classical Chambolle: high-toned aromatics, fine-grained structure, bright acidity, and silk-textured palates. Oak is supportive, never showy. Wines are charming on release yet gain harmony and quiet authority with age—clarity and understatement over force.
